Featuring the work of over 90 of the best watercolor artists, this is an exhibit is outstanding and not to be missed. The National Capital Art Glass Guild (NCAGG) was founded in 1978 as a community of artisans working in stained glass and has grown over the years to include all forms of glass art. Through meetings, workshops, presentations, and exhibits, the NCAGG provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences and promotes glass as an art form.  “Autumn Colors and Reflection” at Glenview Mansion Show
October 13th-November 27th, 2024

KENSINGTON, MD, 2024 – Enjoy the beauty and reflections of Autumn as interpreted by the Montgomery Art Association’s members’ artwork at the City of Rockville’s Glenview Mansion. We are honored to have acclaimed artist Jordan Bruns award prizes of recognition. The show will run from October 13 until November 27th and is free and open to the public.

Opening Reception: Saturday, November 2, 5-8pm

After studying at the Bauhaus in Germany, Werner Drewes (1899-1985) emigrated to New York in 1930. He was one of the first artists to bring the creative principles of non-objective art to America. He was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists Group and one of the first to exhibit abstract art at the Guggenheim and MOMA. He encouraged a new genre of artists in New York City through Hayter’s Atelier 17 workshops, as a WPA Graphics program director, and as a professor at Columbia University. Later, he continued his teaching career at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, before returning to the east coast, where he spent his final years in Reston, Virginia. He continued to create, show, and teach, until his death in 1985.

This show will embrace works spanning his Bauhaus studies to his retirement years where he continued to “play with shape, form and color” in the creations of stunning abstract collages. No Drewes show would be complete without an assemblage of his multi-plate, textured woodcuts. This show will also include pastels and watercolors never exhibited. We are proud to share this art with you, from one of our most formidable American Abstract Artists.

Come to our special presentation on the Atelier 17 Project. Ann Shafer, independent curator and past curator of the Baltimore Art Museum, will be discussing the exciting plans for celebrating the 100th year of the Atelier 17 Project, a major printing movement brought to the U.S. from France during the 1940s. The event will take place Saturday, November 9 from 4-6pm.

 Giancarlo Esposito will discuss his nearly five-decade career as an acclaimed film, television and stage actor, director and producer. An arts and education advocate, he will share his journey to become a quality thespian while confronting the hurdles many people of color face when breaking into the industry. Speaking candidly about learning to embrace his racial identity as part of his acting identity, this moderated talk format event will be thought-provoking and inspiring as he redefines success and encourages the audience to pursue what they love.

Esposito is well known by television audiences for his portrayal of drug kingpin Gustavo “Gus” Fring in AMC’s critically acclaimed award-winning series Breaking Bad, for which he won the 2012 Critics Choice Award and received a 2012 Emmy nomination. He reprised his role in AMC’s critically acclaimed and Emmy® nominated prequel Better Call Saul. He also stars in The Mandalorian series, part of the Star Wars franchise, as Moff Gideon.

Esposito appeared in the second and third installments of the action franchise The Maze Runner, and other film credits include The Last Holiday, Okja, Do the Right Thing, Waiting to Exhale, The Gift, King of New York and Cotton Club. He made his directorial debut with the film Gospel Hill, in which he co-starred, and he also directed and starred in The Show. An actor of both stage and screen, Esposito’s Broadway credits include Storefront Church, Merrily We Roll Along, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

While her preferred mediums have always been oil or pastel, her methods, techniques and aesthetic aims have all undergone significant transformation. Her paintings, situated between abstraction and recognizable form, are explorations of the color of air and beauty. Recognized as an Eminent Pastelist with the International Pastel Society, and a winner of the President’s Award in 2024, she is represented by Warm Springs Gallery in Warm Springs, VA.

We would like to invite you and your family to our annual Season Showcase on Saturday, November 9th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the AFI Silver Theatre.

Each year, Action Youth Media (AYM) takes time to recognize the accomplishments of our incredible students. Our Showcase is a celebration of the work they’ve created throughout the year. It’s important to us that they can celebrate their achievements in a professional theatre setting.

We will be viewing films from our Takoma Park film camp programs, our spring and summer intern programs, and class projects from our semester classes. The presentations will be followed by a Q&A with the students who created these projects and some special guests. There will also be a display of work from our photography students in the lobby.

Witches and wizards! Get yourself to the Arts Barn for an afternoon with Potions Master Professor Snape, a.k.a. Illusions by Vick. Come prepared as you will be tested on your magical abilities. The performance will be 45 minutes and fun for all ages.

Join Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) for Bunkhead Bingo, a Fundraiser dedicated to raising awareness and funds to continue our mission of getting kids off the floor and into their own beds.

SHP builds and delivers beds to children who are currently sleeping on floors, couches, or in other inadequate conditions. Without a proper bed, these children face not only physical discomfort but also significant risks to their health, development, and future success. Providing a bed is not just about comfort—it's a crucial step in ensuring their physical and mental well-being.

We have delivered over 90 beds to children in need, giving them a safe and comfortable place to lay their heads at night. Our goal is to double that in 2025! Join us in support and help us make this goal a reality!

After studying at the Bauhaus in Germany, Werner Drewes (1899-1985) emigrated to New York in 1930. He was one of the first artists to bring the creative principles of non-objective art to America. He was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists Group and one of the first to exhibit abstract art at the Guggenheim and MOMA. He encouraged a new genre of artists in New York City through Hayter’s Atelier 17 workshops, as a WPA Graphics program director, and as a professor at Columbia University. Later, he continued his teaching career at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, before returning to the east coast, where he spent his final years in Reston, Virginia. He continued to create, show, and teach, until his death in 1985.

This show will embrace works spanning his Bauhaus studies to his retirement years where he continued to “play with shape, form and color” in the creations of stunning abstract collages. No Drewes show would be complete without an assemblage of his multi-plate, textured woodcuts. This show will also include pastels and watercolors never exhibited. We are proud to share this art with you, from one of our most formidable American Abstract Artists.

Ann Shafer, independent curator and past curator of the Baltimore Art Museum, will be discussing the exciting plans for celebrating the 100th year of the Atelier 17 Project, a major printing movement brought to the U.S. from France during the 1940s. The event will take place Saturday, November 9 from 4-6pm.

After studying at the Bauhaus in Germany, Werner Drewes (1899-1985) emigrated to New York in 1930. He was one of the first artists to bring the creative principles of non-objective art to America. He was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists Group and one of the first to exhibit abstract art at the Guggenheim and MOMA. He encouraged a new genre of artists in New York City through Hayter’s Atelier 17 workshops, as a WPA Graphics program director, and as a professor at Columbia University. Later, he continued his teaching career at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, before returning to the east coast, where he spent his final years in Reston, Virginia. He continued to create, show, and teach, until his death in 1985.

This show will embrace works spanning his Bauhaus studies to his retirement years where he continued to “play with shape, form and color” in the creations of stunning abstract collages. No Drewes show would be complete without an assemblage of his multi-plate, textured woodcuts. This show will also include pastels and watercolors never exhibited. We are proud to share this art with you, from one of our most formidable American Abstract Artists.

Come to our special presentation on the Atelier 17 Project. Ann Shafer, independent curator and past curator of the Baltimore Art Museum, will be discussing the exciting plans for celebrating the 100th year of the Atelier 17 Project, a major printing movement brought to the U.S. from France during the 1940s. The event will take place Saturday, November 9 from 4-6pm.

While her preferred mediums have always been oil or pastel, her methods, techniques and aesthetic aims have all undergone significant transformation. Her paintings, situated between abstraction and recognizable form, are explorations of the color of air and beauty. Recognized as an Eminent Pastelist with the International Pastel Society, and a winner of the President’s Award in 2024, she is represented by Warm Springs Gallery in Warm Springs, VA.

 Chava Lefand (1797-1884) lived in a time when we'd expect a woman to not be well-represented in documentation. And in fact, looking at traditional genealogical documents gives little information about Chava and the life she lived. But Chava's story shows how much can be learned by looking at non-traditional documentation to learn about an individual and the context in which they lived. Chava had already lost two children to mandatory conscription into the Russian Empire, and she refused to lose another. The widowed mother filed a series of petitions throughout the 1850s which went as high as two Czars and the Governing Senate (the Russian Empire's Supreme Court equivalent). In doing this, she generated a genealogical gold mine (telling of secret marriages and where various relatives were living or hiding from the draft) and gave her perspective on family and community gossip and conflict.
While this is the talk about one woman (the speaker's 5th great grandmother), her hundreds of pages of petitions and appeals tell her perspective of how Jewish families dealt with mandatory conscription of their young children, how conscription caused strife within the Jewish community and formed a hierarchy (she felt she wasn't part of the cool kids' clique), and how relatively simple Jewish families were able to generate a significant amount of documentation in the mid-1800s.

Speaker: Lara Diamond has been researching her family for more than 25 years, since she was too young to have a driver's license and had to rely on her mother as a chauffeur. She has traced all branches of her family back to Europe and most multiple generations back in Europe using Russian Empire-era and Austria-Hungarian Empire records. Most of her research is in modern-day Ukraine, with a smattering of Belarus and Poland. She is president of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Maryland, leads JewishGen's Subcarpathian SIG, is on Ukraine SIG's board of directors, and runs several town-focused projects to collect documentation to assist all those researching ancestors from common towns. Kartemquin Films, established in 1966 in Chicago, is one of the longest-running and most influential independent documentary production companies in the U.S. Renowned for its focus on social issues, Kartemquin has shaped the history of independent documentary filmmaking and played a crucial role in media policy, including the creation of ITVS, public access TV, and filmmakers' fair use.

Kartemquin's films have earned prestigious awards, including Oscar nominations, Emmys, Peabodys, and Sundance Film Festival honors. Notably, Hoop Dreams—one of its most acclaimed films—famously did not receive an Oscar nomination, sparking controversy. Despite challenges in the documentary field, Kartemquin’s enduring influence is rooted in the vision and leadership of co-founder Gordon Quinn and collaborative efforts over six decades.

After studying at the Bauhaus in Germany, Werner Drewes (1899-1985) emigrated to New York in 1930. He was one of the first artists to bring the creative principles of non-objective art to America. He was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists Group and one of the first to exhibit abstract art at the Guggenheim and MOMA. He encouraged a new genre of artists in New York City through Hayter’s Atelier 17 workshops, as a WPA Graphics program director, and as a professor at Columbia University. Later, he continued his teaching career at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, before returning to the east coast, where he spent his final years in Reston, Virginia. He continued to create, show, and teach, until his death in 1985.

This show will embrace works spanning his Bauhaus studies to his retirement years where he continued to “play with shape, form and color” in the creations of stunning abstract collages. No Drewes show would be complete without an assemblage of his multi-plate, textured woodcuts. This show will also include pastels and watercolors never exhibited. We are proud to share this art with you, from one of our most formidable American Abstract Artists.

The National Capital Art Glass Guild (NCAGG) was founded in 1978 as a community of artisans working in stained glass and has grown over the years to include all forms of glass art. Through meetings, workshops, presentations, and exhibits, the NCAGG provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences and promotes glass as an art form. KENSINGTON, MD, 2024 – Enjoy the beauty and reflections of Autumn as interpreted by the Montgomery Art Association’s members’ artwork at the City of Rockville’s Glenview Mansion. We are honored to have acclaimed artist Jordan Bruns award prizes of recognition. The show will run from October 13 until November 27th and is free and open to the public.

He was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists Group and one of the first to exhibit abstract art at the Guggenheim and MOMA. He encouraged a new genre of artists in New York City through Hayter’s Atelier 17 workshops, as a WPA Graphics program director, and as a professor at Columbia University.
